Start by reading and following these instructions:

1. Quickly skim the questions or assignment below and the assignment rubric to help you focus.

2. Read the textbook’s required chapter(s) and any additional recommended resources.  Some answers may require you to do additional research on the Internet or in other reference sources.  Choose your sources carefully.

3. Consider the discussion and any insights you gained from it.

4. Create your Assignment submission and be sure to cite your sources, use APA style as required, check your spelling.

Assignment:

Length: 1500 word essay

Structure: include a title and a reference page. These pages do not count towards the minimum word amount for this assignment.

References: Use at least one APA style in-text citation and references for all resources utilized to answer the questions.   

Format: Save your assignment as a Microsoft Word document (.doc or Docx).

Filename: Name your saved file according to your first initial, last name, and assignment number  (for example “RHallAssignment1.docx”).

Submission: Submit to D2L Dropbox for grading by Monday at 11:59 p.m., PST.

Assignment Guidelines:

Goal: Create examples of good and bad communication to teach others how to best communicate.

Role: You are a staff educator.

Audience: Healthcare workers.

Situation: You are a staff educator who is trying to teach healthcare staff how to be empathetic listeners and communicators.

Product/Purpose: Create a script for a role play in which a patient is trying to communicate and a healthcare worker is not seeking to understand before seeking to be understood. Then create a second script for a role play in which a patient is trying to communicate and a healthcare worker empathetically and with cultural sensitivity listens and communicates a “win/win” solution to the problem. Be sure to cite Covey’s book for evidence in APA style.

Standards and Criteria for Success:

Citing Covey’s book in proper APA style, the scripts must create a role play that utilizes Covey’s principles well and a situation in which the principles are not used. The “good” script must showcase empathetic and culturally sensitive listening and a “win/win” solution to a problem.
