Medicinal Cannabis Policies and Practices

Medical marijuana, in my opinion, should be legalized in all the states to help patients in critical conditions. This would not only help those individuals that require palliative care, but also those that suffer with anxiety, insomnia, depression, and Parkinson’s Disease just to name a few. Palliative care is targeted towards any individual that is battling a serious illness and needs immediate one on one attention. I believe this gives them comfort through their illness and helps them receive proper medical attention.

From the perspective of an individual going into the health care field, I believe we should not hold back a patient from a type of treatment that they can benefit from because it is illegalized in majority of the states in the United States. I believe that medical marijuana should be legalized because it is something that patients can benefit from. At the end of the day, if it helps them manage their pain levels and makes them feel better, then why not legalize it? This paper is targeted towards current and future patients that can benefit from the legalization of medical marijuana.

In this essay, I will be focusing on how the legalization of medical marijuana can help benefit those patients under palliative care as well as those that suffer from other diseases, and how it can help benefit our economy. Some of the diseases that medical marijuana can help tame are Alzheimer’s Disease, Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Chrohn’s Disease, various cancers, as well as Arthritis to list a few.

It helps these patients by reducing the pain and/or making it more manageable to endure. It helps relieve muscle spasms for those individuals who have uncontrollable seizures as well. Since one of the benefits of marijuana is to calm your body, it can easily be used for an individual who suffers from insomnia to help them sleep better at night.

Also, marijuana helps patients that have eating disorders. It triggers the individual’s appetite and causes a sensation of hunger, leading them to intake proper nutrition needed for survival. One of the major reasons that I am such a strong proponent for the legalization of medical marijuana is because marijuana in general has no side effects. The chances of medical marijuana killing you in not likely, especially if it’s prescribed and supervised by a medical personnel who is molded around your specific medical needs. In comparison to most medication that have multiple side effects, marijuana does not. The main reason why many people are against it is because they believe that people will abuse the access to marijuana, whether it is for medical purposes or not. However, they seem to have forgotten that although some individuals may abuse the privilege of having access to marijuana, there are some who can actually benefit from these treatments. According to the statistics collected by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, approximately 1.43 million individuals with Medicare got hospice care for one or more days in 2016 (Facts on Hospice and Palliative Care, 2018).

That is a lot of individuals that needed palliative care, especially if the statistics are refined to only those individuals that had Medicare and got help from hospice. In my opinion and based on my research, I also believe that our economy could benefit from the overall legalization of marijuana. This would not only help decrease the number of individuals that go to prison every year for being caught with marijuana, but would also reduce the black market in which people sell these drugs illegally. This is not only affecting the prison capacity, but I also believe that there are more severe reasons that people should be sent to prison for. Most users claim to use marijuana because it helps them calm their nerves, it also helps them sleep better, and have an appetite to eat.

However, because it is illegal, they get in a lot of trouble. This is where the legalization of medical marijuana comes in. If this same option was available but through a doctor, these same individuals can get the proper kind of marijuana that is targeted to help them with their needs. The overall legalization of marijuana would not only help make the government millions of dollars, but it would also increase tourism. More people would come to the United States, to experience what marijuana is. It would also help create more jobs in our country as well. In conclusion, I believe that the legalization of medical marijuana can be beneficial for not only palliative care patients, but also many other individuals. I also think that people that have anxiety usually resort to smoking cigarettes, which is far worse than intaking marijuana.

At least marijuana does not kill humans and does not cause lung cancer unless it is excessively abused for reasons apart from medical care. A friend of mine suffers from epilepsy and I feel as though she could really benefit from the legalization of medical marijuana because she can get the proper treatments that she needs to help her cope with her medical illness. I personally suffer from very bad anxiety and insomnia and during my research, I came across CBD oils, which I personally think I could benefit from. However, without proper doctors’ guidance, I would never try it on my own. Overall, I believe that if a large population of individuals diagnosed with various different diseases can benefit from this, then why not legalize it and let them get proper access to better treatments?
