Quantitative vs. Qualitative Debate

Your instructor will divide the class into two groups: Debate Team 1 and Debate Team 2. Please make sure you place your original post and response posts in the appropriate area. You will debate the values of the two main types of research as follows:

  • Debate Team 1 – Qualitative is more effective

Debate Team 1 –Present an argument in a substantial initial post that qualitative research is a better method than quantitative research in health information management or health informatics. Use at least three scholarly sources, one of which can be the textbook, to provide evidence that supports this argument. (Hint: it may be helpful to find qualitative studies in the field of health to prove your point)

  • Debate Team 1 Responses to Team 2: Post a rebuttal against two of your classmates who were on Team 2. Read through your peers’ posts and then refute two of your classmates’ arguments that Qualitative Research is more effective than Quantitative research.

Debate Team 2 – Present an argument in a substantial post that quantitative research is a more effective method than qualitative research in health information management or health informatics. Use at least three scholarly sources, one of which can be the textbook, in providing evidence that supports this argument. (Hint: it may be helpful to find quantitative studies in the field of health to prove your point)

  • Debate Team 2 Responses to Team 1: Post a rebuttal against two of your classmates who were on Team 1. Read through the posts and then refute two of your classmates’ arguments stating that Quantitative Research is more effective than Qualitative research.

NOTE: To start, craft your initial argument in support of the side you have been assigned. This post must be a minimum of 300 words. Remember, your post must analyze how either quantitative or qualitative research is more effective than the other. Even if you do not personally agree with the side that has been assigned to you, you must still present a convincing argument that upholds that side in your initial post and your responses.  Then, respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts who were assigned the opposite side of the debate.  Your responses to your classmates should present a counterargument, where as a supporter of your assigned side, you give reasons for why you disagree with them based on pertinent information. You are strongly encouraged to review this week’s recommended reading and to research on your own to identify other sources to support your argument.

Your initial post must include:

  • A succinct thesis statement that demonstrates your stance on the topic.
  • A clear explanation for your rationale and examples to support your view.
  • A minimum of three scholarly, peer-reviewed sources. One of these sources may be from the course Required and/or Recommended Resources, and at least one must be obtained through the University of Arizona Global Campus Library.

Each response to a classmate must be unique and should include:

  • A succinct statement of your thesis regarding why you disagree with their stance on the issue.
  • A clear response that explains your rationale for your opposing stance and examples to support your view.
  • A minimum of two scholarly, peer-reviewed sources. One of these sources may be from the course Required and/or Recommended Resources, and at least one must be obtained through the University of Arizona Global Campus Library.
