 INTRODUCTION

Researchers did their very best to seek ways or methods to alleviate the inflammation happening to certain individuals and here came the so-called anti-inflammatory drugs that helps in alleviating the pain felt by the person.

These are substances that cure the pain felt by the patient by reducing inflammation as opposed to opioids, which affect the central nervous system. The research study entitled “Gumamela (Hibiscus rosa-sinensin Linn) Flowers as an Anti-Inflammatory Ointment” was conducted in order to help people cure the inflammation in an economical manner.

Statement of the Problem The proposed research investigatory problem is entitled “Gumamela (Hibiscus rosa-sinensin Linn) flowers as anti-inflammatory ointment” will be conducted in order to help people cure the inflammation in an economical manner. Specifically,the proposed study will seek to answer the following questions: How effective is the Gumamela (Hibiscus rosa-sinensin Linn) Flowers in terms of: 1. 1 Reduction of inflammation? Is there any significant differences in the level of effectiveness of Gumamela (Hibiscus rosa-sinensin Linn) Flowers as an anti-inflammatory ointment?

Hypothesis There is no significant difference in the level effectiveness of Gumamela (Hibiscus rosa-sinensin Linn) Flowers as an anti-inflammatory ointment in terms of reduction of inflammation.

There is no significant difference in the level of effectiveness of Gumamela (Hibiscus rosa-sinensin Linn) Flowers as an anti-inflammatory ointment. Significance of the study The results of the study will help everyone suffering from external inflammation caused by various factors like; Burns, Chemical irritants, Frostbite and other factors.

This will reduce the pain suffered by an individual by reducing inflammation as opposed to opioids, which affect the central nervous system. Moreover,it will help people suffering from Rheumatoid arthritis, Shoulder tendinitis or bursitis, Gouty arthritis and Polymyalgia rheumatic to achieve painless remedy for it. Finally,it will help everyone (whatever their economic status in life) achieve the remedy for inflammation in an economical manner. Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study entitled Gumamela (Hibiscus rosa-sinensin Linn) Flowers as an anti-inflammatory ointment will focus only on the use of Gumamela (Hibiscus rosa-sinensin Linn) Flowers as an anti-inflammatory ointment which will evaluate the determination in the level of effectiveness of the three samples of Gumamela (Hibiscus rosa-sinensin Linn) Flowers as an anti-inflammatory ointment in terms of reduction of inflammation. The study will be conducted at Estancia,Kalibo, Aklan during the School Year 2011-2012.

Definition of Terms The following are the terms defined theoretically and operationally: Gumamela- Gumamela (Hibiscus rosa-sinensin Linn) is cultivated as an ornamental flower throughout the Philippines. It is common on Mt. Banahaw. Gumamela flowers are used as an expectorant in bronchitis, for general coughs, and as a refrigerant drink in fevers. Flower-sometimes known as a bloom or blossom, is the reproductivestructure found in flowering plants (plants of the division Magnoliophyta, also called angiosperms).

The biological function of a flower is to effect reproduction, usually by providing a mechanism for the union of sperm with eggs. Inflammation- (Latin, inflammo, “I ignite, set alight”) is part of the complex biological response of vascular tissues to harmful stimuli, such as pathogens, damaged cells, or irritants. Inflammation is a protective attempt by the organism to remove the injurious stimuli and to initiate the healing process.

Inflammation is not a synonym for infection, even in cases where inflammation is caused by infection. Although infection is caused by a microorganism, inflammation is one of the responses of the organism to the pathogen. However, inflammation is a stereotyped response, and therefore it is considered as a mechanism of innate immunity, as compared to adaptive immunity, which is specific for each pathogen. Anti-inflammatory- refers to the property of a substance or treatment that reduces inflammation.

Ointment-is a homogeneous, viscous, semi-solid preparation, most commonly a greasy, thick oil (oil 80% – water 20%) with a high viscosity, that is intended for external application to the skin or mucous membranes. They are used as emollients or for the application of active ingredients to the skin for protective, therapeutic, or prophylactic purposes and where a degree of occlusion is desired.
